Top architects are competing for design glory at the World Architecture Festival under way in Amsterdam.


The Netherlands may be well known for its industrial windmills, but many of its more modern structures also show an innovative blend of form and function.


Complex engineering ingenuity was required to build the Dutch capital’s new north-south metro line through the city’s canals and thick layers of mud, while the University of Amsterdam is replacing some of its older buildings with new ones that were designed with social interaction and exchange in mind, both architectural feats accomplished with quiet aspiration to improve the way the city’s citizens live their lives.

Toronto man denies conspiring with Marvel CEO in alleged hate mail scheme

READ MORE A Toronto man accused of conspiring with the head of Marvel Entertainment in a bizarre hate mail campaign against his wealthy former employer has denied any role in the alleged scheme. David Smith, along with Marvel CEO Isaac (Ike) Perlmutter, is the target of a slander lawsuit launched earlier this year by Canadian businessman Harold Peerenboom. Now Smith — a former employee of Peerenboom’s Toronto-based executive search firm, Mandrake Management — has filed a motion to dismiss the U.S. civil suit. It’s the latest development in the years-long legal battle between Peerenboom and Perlmutter, a notoriously reclusive American billionaire and personal friend of U.S. President Donald Trump.
