Pacific Rim trade deal set to start Dec. 30, as 6th member Australia ratifies

Image
READ MORE U.S. President Donald Trump tried to kill it, but the Trans-Pacific Partnership wouldn’t stay dead. Less than two years after the U.S. withdrew from the landmark Pacific Rim trade deal it once saw as key to an Asian trade strategy, six of the remaining countries have ratified it, enough to bring the revised Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)  into force 60 days from now on Dec. 30. Australia became the sixth country to do so Wednesday, filing its official notice with New Zealand, the country that’s acting as the depository and keeping track of its implementation. “The signal that it sends to the rest of the world that there’s a new rules-based order out there in the world that people can buy into if they want as an incredibly powerful signal at this particular time,” David Parker, New Zealand’s minister of Trade and Export Growth, told reporters. Canada was the fifth c...

Accused shooter at Pittsburgh synagogue indicted by grand jury

Image
READ MORE The suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday, four days after 11 people were killed and six wounded in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history. The indictment, which was expected, charges Robert Bowers with 44 counts, including hate crimes. Federal prosecutors have previously indicated they plan to seek the death penalty. The charges were announced on the second day of funerals for the victims. “Today begins the process of seeking justice for the victims of these hateful acts, and healing for the victims’ families, the Jewish community, and our city,” U.S. Attorney Scott Brady said in a statement. “Our office will spare no resource, and will work with professionalism, integrity and diligence, in a way that honours the memories of the victims.” Bowers remained jailed without bail ahead of a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday. Richard Gottfried, 65, was one of the 11 people killed in t...

Switzerland suspends arms shipment to Saudi over Khashoggi case

READ MORE Switzerland has halted the delivery of spare weapon parts to Saudi Arabia, citing concern over the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi  inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul. Fabian Maienfisch, spokesman of the economic affairs department, told AFP news agency on Wednesday that Bern would follow developments and potentially reverse the decision in the future. The Swiss government halted arms exports to Saudi Arabia  in 2009 but was until now supplying the kingdom with spare parts as well as munitions for air-defence systems and firearms for private use. Khashoggi, a 59-year-old Saudi journalist and Washington Post columnist critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman , was killed after entering the consulate in Istanbul on October 2. On Wednesday, Turkey ‘s chief prosecutor made details of the murder public for the first time, revealing that the journalist had been strangled as soon as he entered the consulate. Gruesome reports in th...

HRW: Sexual violence part of 'ordinary life' in North Korea

Image
READ MORE North Korean officials commit sexual violence against women with little concern for the consequences while the government neither investigates nor prosecutes complaints and does nothing to support the victims, a report said on Thursday. Unwanted sexual contact and violence are so common in North Korea it had “come to be accepted as part of ordinary life”,  New York-based  Human Rights Watch  said. Women interviewed said sexual predators included high-ranking party officials, prison and detention facility guards and interrogators, secret police, prosecutors, and soldiers. Such abuse is rarely reported not only because victims fear social disgrace in a deeply conservative society, but also retaliation, the 86-page report found . Former detainees said investigators can easily harass female detainees in such situations [Choi Seong Guk/Human Rights Watch] “Sexual violence in North Korea is an open, unaddressed, and widely tolerated secret,” sa...

GM offers buyouts to 18,000 workers amid strong profits

Image
READ MORE As General Motors reported a healthy $3.29 billion third-quarter profit, the Detroit automaker ramped up its cost-cutting efforts by offering buyouts to 18,000 white-collar workers in both the United States and Canada. The company, while acknowledging it’s in good shape now, said Wednesday it needs to be smaller to prepare for tougher times that might be ahead as it continues to get ready for a future of electric and autonomous vehicles. “Even with the progress we’ve made, we are taking proactive steps to get ahead of the curve by accelerating our efforts to address overall business performance,” GM said in a statement. “We are doing this while our company and economy are strong.” The earnings and buyout news drove GM shares higher in Wednesday afternoon trading. The stock was up 8.6 per cent to $47.94, after mostly falling since June. Buyout offers were made Wednesday to salaried workers in North America with 12 or more years of ...

Indonesia says 'ping' possibly from jet's black box getting clearer

Image
READ MORE A “ping” sound believed to be emitted by the black box of an Indonesian jet that crashed into the sea this week with 189 aboard is getting clearer, the deputy of a national transport safety committee said on Thursday. Ground staff lost touch with flight JT610 of budget airline Lion Air 13 minutes after the Boeing 737 MAX 8 took off early on Monday from Jakarta, on its way to the tin-mining town of Pangkal Pinang. There were no survivors. “The ping sound is clearer,” Haryo Satmiko, deputy chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), told Reuters. “We’ve deployed a remote operating vehicle and detected a large chunk on the bottom of the sea. We suspect that is a part of the plane’s body.” A team of divers had gone down since 5 a.m. local time to map the area where the black box is thought to be, he added, describing sea conditions as normal. Midweek podcast: Pay equity and jurors' mental health

Image
READ MORE Patty Hajdu, minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, isn’t denying pay equity will be a tough for employers. This week the Liberal government introduced its pay equity legislation. If the bill passes, employers in federally-regulated workplaces would need to review their pay practices to make sure women and men receive equal pay for work of equal value. It requires employers to establish a pay equity plan within three years of the legislation coming into force and would apply to employers with 10 or more workers. “It reflects the work that organizations will have to do,” Hajdu told The House. “In the end this is good for the economy, it’s good for women.” Employers would have to identify job classes, evaluate work, and compare compensation associated with similar jobs dominated by men and women respectively. “This pay equity piece is really about valuing work that is considered female in the same way t...

Lawsuit alleges Harvey Weinstein sexually assaulted teen girl

Image
READ MORE Harvey Weinstein was accused in a civil court filing Wednesday of forcing a 16-year-old Polish model to touch his penis, subjecting her to years of harassment and emotional abuse and blocking her from a successful acting career as payback for refusing his advances. The accuser, identified as Jane Doe, alleges that Weinstein assaulted her at his New York City apartment in 2002, just days after they’d met at an event involving her modelling agency. Doe alleges the movie mogul promised to take her to lunch to discuss her career, but instead took her to his empty SoHo apartment and “aggressively and threateningly” demanded sex. Weinstein instructed Doe to take off her clothes and intimated that she’d never work as an actress unless she gave in to his demands, according to the filing, the latest revelation in a lawsuit alleging Weinstein’s movie studio board enabled his behaviour. “Terrified and struggling to hold back tears, Jane Doe said she w...

Sirisena, Jayasuriya fail to break Sri Lanka deadlock

READ MORE Colombo, Sri Lanka – Sri Lanka ‘s president and speaker of parliament failed to resolve a crisis over the abrupt sacking of the country’s prime minister amid fears opposing parties may turn to violence and bribery to break the deadlock . Speaker Karu Jayasuriya held emergency talks with President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday, urging him to recall parliament and let legislators choose between the two men claiming to be the country’s lawful prime minister, according to Chaminda Gamage, a spokesman for the speaker. But the hour-long meeting in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, ended without a resolution, said Chaminda. “Sirisena said he will consider the speaker’s request and get back to him soon,” he said. Sri Lanka has been gripped by constitutional chaos since Friday after Sirisena fired Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, suspended parliament, and appointed a controversial leader he had defeated in elections in 2015 to the pr...

Proposal could create world's largest protected area in Antarctic

Image
READ MORE Across the planet eco-systems are in a dire state. Many believe a mass extinction is under way, the sixth since life first started in the primeval melting pot billions of years ago. This chilling fact adds a surging piquancy to the moment when you stand on the deck of an icebreaker and stare out over the vast, remote wilderness that is the Weddell Sea, a huge expanse of icy ocean fringing the Antarctic continent.  It is the coldest sea on Earth, indeed it is the cold water heart of the planet, pumping and driving the deep water currents that circulate around the world’s oceans – a crucial mechanism that helps regulate our climate systems.  Here too exists a spectacular festival of life. It is the realm of blue whales and orcas, of leopard seals and penguins and myriad marine animals, of thousands of species yet to be discovered. It is not yet the realm of man. And many want to keep it that way. Antarctic expedition In February this year I joined a Greenp...

Calgary council votes to revive Olympic bid from near-death

Image
READ MORE Calgary city council voted to keep the city’s 2026 Olympic bid alive after more than seven hours of heated discussions Wednesday, but it could simply be on life support until the next challenge on Nov. 13 when Calgarians will vote on a non-binding plebiscite to determine the bid’s future. The vote came after acrimonious debate that has played out over the past several days about the future of the bid, with several councillors that had previously supported it flipping their position. The councillors voted 8-7 in favour of the motion to halt the process. But it wasn’t enough to meet the super-majority requirement of 10 votes. Here’s the vote. It needed 10 votes to pass. However, at least majority of Councillors are now don’t want the Olympics. a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/yyc?src=hashamp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”#yyc/a a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/yyccc?src=hashamp;ref_s...
